SANTA CRUZ, CA (November 19, 2024) – Authorities have identified Ryan Fairrington, 43, as the victim of a deadly hit-and-run that took place early Wednesday morning in Santa Cruz County.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office stated that Fairrington, who was homeless, was struck and killed alongside his dog at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Eddy Lane around 2:46 a.m.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a southbound vehicle struck Fairrington and his dog before fleeing the scene. Both the pedestrian and the dog sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Later that day, the driver, 54-year-old Pedro Martinez Urbano of Watsonville, turned himself in and was arrested. He has been charged with vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence and hit-and-run resulting in death. Urbano pled not guilty during his arraignment on the Santa Cruz County hit-and-run and is scheduled to appear in court on December 12, 2024.
