SANTA CATALINA ISLAND, CA (November 7, 2024) – xA small plane’s tragic crash on Santa Catalina Island in October continues to leave the aviation community reeling. A new report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has revealed troubling details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The twin-engine Beechcraft 95-B44 airplane, owned by 73-year-old Ali Safai, crashed about a mile from the Catalina Airport, killing all five on board. The report on the Catalina Island plane crash shows the pilot had been clearly told by the airport manager not to take off after dark due to the airport’s unsafe nighttime conditions, which include a lack of air traffic control, attendants, and runway lights.
Despite this directive, the pilot reportedly insisted on departing, putting the passengers, including Haris Ali, Margaret Mary Fenner, Joeun Park, and Gonzalo Lubel, in grave danger. The plane experienced battery issues that delayed the takeoff, pushing it past the recommended sunset time. Tragically, the aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff, hitting a nearby ridgeline.
