LOMPOC, CA (November 22, 2024) – Two young children lost their lives in a suspected drunk driving crash north of Lompoc on Wednesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Lompoc drunk driving crash occurred around 3:50 p.m. on Harris Grade Road after 23-year-old Brian Hernandez-Cervantes, a Cuyama resident, attempted to flee from law enforcement during a traffic stop.
CHP officers said Hernandez-Cervantes sped recklessly, passing vehicles on the narrow two-lane road, before losing control of his Infiniti sedan. The car struck a tree with such force that it split in two. The front section slid down a wooded hillside, while the rear collided with a southbound vehicle.
Two children in the Infiniti, ages three and seven months, were killed at the scene. Hernandez-Cervantes sustained moderate injuries, while the driver of the other vehicle was unharmed.
Authorities determined Hernandez-Cervantes was under the influence of alcohol and arrested him on charges including murder, felony child endangerment, DUI, and reckless driving causing injury. He is being held at the Santa Barbara County Jail.
