NEWBURY PARK, CA (October 31, 2024) – A tragic crash involving a parked big rig on southbound Highway 101 claimed the lives of two young adults and left two others injured early Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. near Wendy Drive when a 2016 Honda Civic carrying four passengers veered off the exit and struck a parked semitrailer on the right shoulder.
Officer Ryan Ayers of the CHP’s Moorpark office reported that the Honda, previously observed driving at high speeds, failed to negotiate the left lane of the Wendy Drive exit. Instead, the vehicle continued straight, colliding with the big rig parked along the shoulder in the pre-dawn darkness. After the initial impact, the car reportedly continued out of control, struck a large boulder, and overturned before coming to rest on its roof about 500 feet south of the big rig.
Two passengers, a man and a woman in their late teens or early twenties, were thrown from the vehicle and declared dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
The Honda’s driver, a 19-year-old from Pico Rivera, was also ejected but survived, along with a 20-year-old passenger from Castaic, who was trapped in the wreckage. Both were transported to Los Robles Regional Medical Center with injuries described as minor to moderate.
The parked big rig, a 2015 Freightliner operated by a 25-year-old Oxnard man, was undamaged, and neither he nor his 29-year-old passenger from Phoenix sustained any injuries.
