One Pilot Dead After Two Planes Collide Mid-Air Near Lancaster

LANCASTER, CA (September 23, 2024) — Two small planes collide mid-air near Lancaster, California, on Sunday afternoon, resulting in the death of one pilot and leaving the other uninjured.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department received reports of two downed aircraft at 12:53 p.m. One plane crash-landed on Avenue G near 60th Street East, while the other came down near 47th Street East and Avenue F, approximately two miles southeast. Officials confirmed that the planes involved were single-engine aircraft: a Nanchang CJ-6 and a Yakovlev Yak-52.
Each pilot was the sole occupant of their respective plane. Witnesses observed the surviving pilot walking around the crash site in distress. Authorities noted that the collision occurred in a relatively remote area, potentially preventing a larger disaster. “If it was over the city of L.A. or something, there would have been a lot of people,” a witness was quoted as saying.
The California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and Los Angeles County Fire Department are investigating the incident. The National Transportation Safety Board will also conduct a separate probe to determine the cause of the crash. The identity of the deceased pilot has not been released pending notification of family.
