Over 2,400 Patients in Oregon Hospital Exposed to HIV Due to Error
(July 13, 2024) — More than 2,400 patients in Oregon might have been exposed to HIV and hepatitis B and C due to a physician’s poor infection control practices, officials report.
The physician, part of the Oregon Anesthesiology Group, worked at Providence and Legacy Health facilities from 2017 to 2023.
Providence is contacting 2,200 patients from Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center and Providence Portland Medical Center, urging them to get free blood tests. Legacy Health is notifying 221 patients treated by the physician at Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center.
The Oregon Health Authority identified the physician’s “unacceptable infection control practices” during intravenous anesthesia. No related illnesses have been reported as of this writing.
