Oxnard Man Sentenced to Life for DUI Crash That Killed Grandmother and Child

VENTURA, CA (June 12, 2024) — A Ventura County man has been sentenced to 30 years to life in state prison for his role in a fatal DUI crash that claimed the lives of a grandmother and her 7-year-old granddaughter. The accident, which occurred on June 22, 2020, involved Jacob Caliboso of Oxnard who was under the influence of Xanax and marijuana at the time.
Driving westbound on Pleasant Valley Road, Caliboso crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a motorcycle carrying Elva Andrade and her granddaughter, Nevaeh Gomez. Andrade died at the scene, while Gomez succumbed to her injuries the following day at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles.
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office reported that Caliboso had been speeding and did not attempt to brake before the collision. Evidence presented at his trial included numerous Snapchat videos and photos depicting his drug use and reckless driving in the weeks leading up to the Oxnard DUI crash.
During the trial, family members of the victims provided impact statements, expressing their profound loss. Caliboso was convicted on April 30, and his sentencing reflects the maximum punishment permitted by law for his offenses.
