Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Metro Train in South LA

LOS ANGELES, CA (June 1, 2024) — A Metro light rail train struck and killed a pedestrian Friday afternoon near Vernon Station in South Los Angeles, as reported by the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The collision occurred around 1:45 p.m. when an adult male, crossing the tracks near Long Beach Avenue, was hit by a southbound Metro A Line train, according to the L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Firefighters found the man fully underneath the train but not trapped by its understructure. “The firefighters actually crawled beneath the very narrow area beneath the train to discreetly, and in a dignified manner, make the removal of remains,” LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey reportedly stated.
The man was declared dead at the scene.
The Metro Train pedestrian accident involved 42 passengers aboard the three-car train, none of whom were injured. Following the accident, Vernon Station was closed, and Metro established a bus bridge between Washington and Slauson stations.
Metro spokesperson Dave Sotero extended condolences to the deceased’s family and friends and urged adherence to rail safety guidance. The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the collision.
