Police Seek Hit-and-Run Driver After Fatal Santa Ana Crash

SANTA ANA, CA (May 29, 2024) — Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who left one person dead and another hospitalized in Santa Ana on April 2, 2023. The victim who died has been identified as 21-year-old Joshua Cervantes.
According to the Santa Ana Police Department, Cervantes and friends were standing next to a car near Ross Street and St. Gertrude Place when an SUV struck them. Cervantes crouched down moments before the SUV hit him and another person. The driver did not stop and sped away westbound on St. Gertrude Place.
Officers found Cervantes unresponsive on the road. He was rushed to a trauma center but was pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts. The other victim survived but was hospitalized for several days.
Cervantes’ mother, Frances Morga, expressed her heartbreak, saying, “My son was the world to us. He was so special. The last day I saw him I gave him a hug and told him ‘I love you,’ and he said ‘Mom, I love you.’ I don’t know how to continue on without him. I miss him so much.”
The suspect’s vehicle is described as a silver or gold-colored 2000s-era SUV, similar to a Ford Expedition. Police urge anyone with information on the Joshua Cervantes hit-and-run to contact Santa Ana police sergeant Richard Shin at 714-245-8294.
