Rebecca Grossman Sentenced to 15 Years to Life for Fatal 2020 Crash

(June 11, 2024) — Rebecca Grossman, co-founder of the Grossman Burn Foundation, has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the deaths of two young brothers, Mark and Jacob Iskander, in a 2020 hit-and-run incident. The tragic event occurred while the boys were crossing a street in Westlake Village with their family.

During the hearing, 60-year-old Grossman expressed remorse, stating, “God knows that I never saw anybody,” and reiterated that she did not see the boys on the night of the accident. However, prosecutors highlighted her “complete lack of remorse and narcissistic superiority” since the crash, advocating for a maximum sentence of 34 years to life.

Her defense argued for leniency, citing her lack of criminal history and philanthropic efforts, requesting a sentence of probation or a lower state prison term of just over 12 years.

However, Superior Court Judge Joseph Brandolino, recognizing the “unimaginable loss” suffered by the Iskander family, opted for a 15-year sentence, describing Grossman’s behavior post-crash as “incredibly selfish” but stopped short of deeming her a “monster.”

This case has stirred considerable public and legal interest, especially given the severity of the incident and Grossman’s high-profile status. The Iskander family remains deeply affected, with Nancy Iskander disputing Grossman’s claim that she was advised against reaching out to the family post-accident.

The Rebecca Grossman sentence has raised questions about the effectiveness of the justice system in handling cases that involve wealthy individuals. Grossman, a businesswoman and philanthropist, is said to have made significant contributions to various charities and civic organizations. However, some argue that this should not be used as an excuse for her actions and that she should face the same consequences as any other citizen.
