San Mateo Construction Worker Injured in Trench Collapse

SAN MATEO, CA (August 2, 2024) — A construction worker in his 30s was injured Thursday morning when a trench collapsed in San Mateo.
The incident happened just before 9:30 a.m. on private property in the 300 block of West 41st Avenue, according to Deputy Fire Chief Robert Marshall of the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department.
The worker was part of a construction team working on sewer lines when he became partially buried under at least 10 feet of dirt. Rescue crews, utilizing special equipment, spent nearly an hour extricating the man while ensuring the safety of the rescuers and stabilizing the trench.
The collapse led to the closure of 41st Avenue from Hacienda Street to Alameda de las Pulgas. Initial plans to airlift the injured worker were thwarted by foggy conditions, necessitating transport to a hospital via ambulance. Marshall reported that the San Mateo construction worker injured appeared to be in critical condition at the time of his rescue.
