SeaWorld Visitor Details Terrifying Experience After Roller Coaster Malfunctions
SAN DIEGO, CA (July 13, 2024) — Salina Higgins, who visited SeaWorld San Diego with her 10-year-old daughter and 14-year-old niece from Tucson, Arizona, recounted a harrowing experience on the Electric Eel ride. Higgins described the 47-second ride as feeling like an eternity when her daughter’s safety strap became unsecured while they were upside down.
After a day of rides, Higgins and her daughter boarded the Electric Eel while her niece captured the moment on video. As they reached the ride’s peak, Higgins noticed her daughter’s strap dangling in front of her face.
Higgins noted that a lap bar is supposed to secure riders, but she is uncertain if it also malfunctioned. Despite checking the latch herself and seeing an employee verify it, the incident still occurred. After the ride, Higgins reported the malfunction to an attendant, who apologized but continued loading new riders.
At guest services, a manager’s reportedly dismissive response left Higgins frustrated. “He asked me, ‘Did you read the disclaimer before getting on the ride?’” she recalled. After confirming the disclaimer required comfort collars to be secured, the manager suggested she call a number on the website and had security escort her off the property.
Determined to seek justice and improve safety, Higgins emailed over 100 SeaWorld and Cal/OSHA contacts and shared her story on TikTok, which went viral. SeaWorld has yet to respond, and Cal/OSHA is investigating the SeaWorld ride malfunction incident.
