Smoking Laptop Prompts Evacuation of American Airlines Plane
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (July 14, 2024) — Smoke from a laptop inside a passenger’s bag led to the evacuation of an American Airlines flight at San Francisco International Airport on Friday afternoon.
Passengers were boarding Flight 2045 to Miami when smoke began filling the cabin. Crew members quickly removed the smoking laptop and bag, prompting an evacuation. Some passengers used emergency slides, while others exited via the jet bridge.
One passenger suffered minor injuries during the evacuation. The airport reported three people with minor injuries, none of whom required hospitalization.
American Airlines thanked their crew for their professionalism and apologized for the inconvenience. The Federal Aviation Administration has noted 30 incidents involving lithium batteries this year, highlighting ongoing safety concerns.
