Tesla Faces Lawsuit Over Air Pollution at Fremont Factory

FREMONT, CA (May 16, 2024) — Tesla is being sued by the Environmental Democracy Project, an East Bay nonprofit, for allegedly violating federal air standards at its Fremont factory.
The lawsuit claims Tesla has breached the Clean Air Act, exposing residents and workers to harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, arsenic, and cadmium.
“Tesla has been violating the Clean Air Act while only getting small slaps on the wrist from regulators,” Tanya Boyce, Executive Director of the Environmental Democracy Project, was quote by news agencies as saying.
Boyce pointed to the factory’s painting areas as the primary sources of pollution.
Residents near the Fremont facility have reported experiencing breathing issues they attribute to the factory’s emissions. Despite some community members dismissing the pollution concerns, the Tesla air pollution lawsuit highlights the company’s 112 violation notices over the past five years. The nonprofit is seeking an abatement order to compel Tesla to reduce its emissions.
