Toyota Recalls 145,000 SUVs Over Airbag Safety Issue
(June 24, 2024) — Toyota has issued a safety recall affecting approximately 145,000 Grand Highlander and Lexus TX SUVs due to a potential airbag malfunction. These vehicles, all from the 2024 model year, may have a driver-side curtain airbag that fails to deploy during certain crashes if the driver’s window is open, increasing the risk of injury.
The Toyota recall does not include the standard Highlander, which launched in 2019. Toyota has indicated that the airbag issue makes the recalled models non-compliant with federal safety regulations. However, the specific cause of the airbag malfunction has not been disclosed.
Owners of affected SUVs will receive notification by mail by mid-August 2024. Until the issue is resolved, Toyota and Lexus have issued a stop-sale order for the 2024 Grand Highlander and TX, halting production temporarily.
One customer complaint has been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding a non-deploying airbag. In May 2024, a motorist in Georgia reported that the side airbags did not deploy after a Grand Highlander was involved in a T-bone collision. There have been no similar complaints for the TX model.
