13-Year-Old Killed in Suspected DUI Crash in Escondido
ESCONDIDO, CA (April 29, 2024) — A tragic accident in Escondido has claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy, Rodrigo Tapia Junior, following a two-vehicle collision allegedly involving a drunk driver.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of North Broadway and Country Club Lane.
Escondido Police reported that first responders found several injured parties at the scene, with Rodrigo critically wounded. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at Palomar Medical Center. Two other individuals, including the suspected impaired driver, 20-year-old Alexander Tito Oroz, were also hospitalized but are expected to survive.
Rodrigo, remembered by his family and friends as a vibrant and ambitious young boy, had been attending a Quinceañera just hours before the accident. Oroz, who is now facing charges of felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter, allegedly ran a red light during the crash.
