6-Year-Old Killed, Sister Injured in Pomona Crosswalk Crash [Pomona, CA]
POMONA, CA (May 30, 2024) — A family in Pomona is grieving after a tragic accident claimed the life of 6-year-old Guadalupe Alvarez Salgado and severely injured her 19-year-old sister, Mireya. The incident happened just after 8 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Towne and Lexington avenues as they were crossing the street in a marked crosswalk.
Officers arriving at the scene found Guadalupe, known as Lupe, and Mireya lying in the street. Mireya was rushed to the hospital and remains in critical condition. Lupe was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lupe, a student at Philadelphia Elementary School, lived nearby with her family. Neighbors reported that the sisters and their mother were returning from a walk to the store when they were struck by a silver Honda Accord driven by a 19-year-old from Upland.
The driver stopped and cooperated with police, including taking a sobriety test at the scene. Nearby surveillance footage captured the Lupe Salgado accident, showing one vehicle slowing down before another car sped through the intersection and struck the girls.
Residents have expressed concerns about the dangerous intersection, citing numerous accidents and speeding drivers. Investigators are examining whether the driver was speeding or distracted at the time of the Pomona crosswalk crash, though they do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved.
