65-Year-Old Man Dies After E-Scooter Hit-and-Run in Koreatown

LOS ANGELES, CA (September 22, 2024) — A 65-year-old man named Donny Kim has died after being struck by a woman riding an electric scooter in Los Angeles’s Koreatown. The incident occurred on September 12 around 4:45 p.m. on the 2800 block of James M. Wood Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Kim was stepping onto the sidewalk after dining with his wife of over 40 years when an unidentified woman on a Lime scooter collided with him and fled the scene without offering assistance. The impact knocked Kim to the ground, causing him to hit his head on the concrete. Although he initially declined medical attention, he was hospitalized later that evening after showing symptoms of a traumatic brain injury.
More than a week after the incident, Kim was declared brain dead and was taken off life support. His family believes the woman may not realize the severity of the accident and hopes she will come forward. They also call for improved scooter safety measures to prevent similar tragedies.
Police describe the woman as wearing a pink T-shirt and riding a Lime scooter at the time of the collision. Lime issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and a willingness to assist in the investigation. Authorities urge anyone with information about the hit-and-run in Koreatown to contact LAPD detectives.
