12-Year-Old Pedestrian Killed in South LA While Walking Home From School
LOS ANGELES, CA (May 5, 2024) — A heartbreaking event unfolded in South Los Angeles where Derrick Serrano, a 12-year-old student, was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking home from school.
The accident occurred in the afternoon of April 18 near the intersection of Vernon and Wadsworth Avenues, just blocks away from Carver Middle School where Derrick was a 6th grader.
His mother, Claudia Gramajo, is devastated, sharing that Derrick’s death could have been avoided if more rigorous safety precautions were in place. The area is notorious for its heavy traffic and lack of pedestrian safeguards such as crosswalks or traffic signals, which has been a longstanding concern among local parents and community leaders.
While the driver involved in the South LA pedestrian accident remained at the scene to cooperate with law enforcement, the community insists that immediate measures be taken to ensure pedestrian safety, especially for children commuting to and from school.
In memory of Derrick and to support the grieving family, a GoFundMe page has been established to assist with funeral expenses.
As we mourn the loss of young Derrick, this tragedy is a reminder of the critical need for adequate pedestrian safety measures in our communities.
