Fatal Crash in South San Jose Leaves One Dead, Three Kids Injured
SAN JOSE, CA (May 3, 2024) — A tragic accident on State Route 85 in South San Jose claimed the life of a 38-year-old East Palo Alto man and injured three young children on Wednesday night.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the single-vehicle collision occurred around 7:10 p.m. south of Cottle Road.
The man was driving a 2002 Toyota Sequoia at speeds exceeding 65 mph in the northbound fast lane when he unexpectedly veered into the center median. The vehicle subsequently collided with a metal guardrail and came to a stop in the fast lane.
Authorities confirmed that the driver died at the scene due to injuries sustained during the crash. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release his name after confirming his identity and notifying his next of kin.
The three children in the vehicle, aged 2, 4, and 8, were transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with minor injuries. The cause of the fatal crash in South San Jose is still under investigation, with officials looking into whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
