Three Killed in Wasco Crash After Driver Runs Stop Sign

KERN COUNTY, CA (October 15, 2024) — Three people died in a collision late Monday afternoon near Wasco when their car was broadsided by a driver who allegedly ran a stop sign, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported. The incident occurred around 4:26 p.m. at the intersection of Scofield Avenue and Elmo Highway.
According to the CHP, a 36-year-old man from Porterville was driving a gray 2016 Ram 3500 eastbound on Elmo Highway and failed to stop at the stop sign at Scofield Avenue. His vehicle collided with a silver 1993 Toyota Camry traveling northbound, which was approaching an uncontrolled intersection.
The impact caused the Toyota to veer out of control, leading to the ejection of one passenger who was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt. All three occupants of the Toyota, including a 65-year-old man from Delano who was driving and two female passengers, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Ram was transported to Kern Medical with minor to moderate injuries. Authorities are investigating whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the Wasco crash.
