Vacaville Police Officer Killed During Traffic Stop by Suspected DUI Driver
VACAVILLE, CA (July 12, 2024) — An on-duty Vacaville police officer tragically lost his life Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle driven by a suspect allegedly under the influence of drugs. The Vacaville police officer killed in the crash was identified as Officer Matthew Bowen.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Leisure Town Road and Orange Drive.
Officer Bowen was conducting a traffic stop when he was hit by the vehicle. The driver, identified as 24-year-old Serena C.J. Rodriguez from Auburn, tried to flee on foot but was detained by bystanders at the scene. Rodriguez has been arrested on charges of homicide and driving under the influence causing injury and/or death.
The crash left Officer Bowen’s police motorcycle heavily damaged. Following the incident, local authorities closed the intersection and one ramp to Interstate 80 to facilitate an investigation, which is being led by the CHP.
Officer Bowen had joined the Vacaville Police Department in 2023 after previously serving with the Concord Police Department. The Vacaville Police Department praised his dedication and service, noting the profound impact of his loss on the department and community. He is survived by his wife, two sons, parents, and a brother.
