Explosion in Placer County Mine Critically Injures Two

PLACER COUNTY, CA (July 10, 2024) — An explosion triggered by static electricity critically injured two workers at a mine in Placer County, Northern California, on Friday morning last week. The incident took place in a mine shaft along Mosquito Ridge Road at Gorman Ranch Road, as confirmed by the Foresthill Fire Protection District.
The injured, identified as workers of what is described as a “hobby” or private mine, were found outside the mine shaft and promptly airlifted to Sutter Roseville Trauma Center. According to Captain Greg Kirk of the Foresthill district, the explosion was a result of an interaction between static electricity and methane gas present in the Placer County mine, a common issue in the region’s historic mines which date back over 150 years.
Mark Dayton, president of the Gold Country Treasure Seekers Club, highlighted the resurgence of mining, fueled by popular YouTube channels showcasing underground mining techniques. He noted the risks posed by electric tools in these environments, which can ignite methane when combined with oxygen.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration has taken charge of the investigation, and the mine will stay closed pending further inspection. The miners were reported to be in stable condition as of Sunday evening.
