Fatal Three-Car Crash on I-80 in Contra Costa County

CONTRA COSTA, CA (June 24, 2024) — Contra Costa County California Highway Patrol (CHP) crews responded to a fatal three-car crash on I-80 westbound, just east of Willow Avenue, on Friday morning.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a silver Chrysler 300, driven by a man, crashed into a gold Chrysler 300 traveling in the same direction. The impact caused the gold Chrysler to flip and come to rest on its roof, blocking multiple lanes.
Minutes later, a white Mazda 3, driven by a woman, collided with the overturned gold Chrysler.
The driver of the gold Chrysler 300 was not injured, according to CHP. The woman driving the Mazda 3 sustained major injuries and was transported to the hospital, where she is expected to recover.
The driver of the silver Chrysler 300, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered major injuries and was taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Contra Costa car crash remains under investigation.
