Fatal Wrong-Way Crash on I-580: Police Pursuit Ends in Tragic Collision
OAKLAND, CA (March 20, 2024) — Tragedy struck early Tuesday morning on Interstate 580 in Oakland, California. A collision involving three vehicles resulted in the loss of one life.
The events unfolded when the El Cerrito Police Department responded to a commercial burglary at Tobacco Outlet. During the pursuit of the suspects, the driver of a white pickup truck, identified as Patrick Sheckells, 34, of Oakland, evaded officers, leading them onto westbound I-80 and eventually onto westbound I-580. In a desperate attempt to flee, the driver recklessly changed direction on the freeway, driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-580.
The ensuing crash involved the suspect’s truck, a white utility van, and a gray BMW. Tragically, the occupant of the BMW lost his life at the scene. Both suspects sustained major injuries, as did the occupant of the white utility van.
The El Cerrito Police Department, in collaboration with the California Highway Patrol, is actively pursuing criminal charges against Sheckells and the other suspect, Andre Alberty, 56, of San Francisco.
