Wrong-Way Driver Causes Fatal Head-On Collision on I-8

SAN DIEGO, CA (May 20, 2024) — A wrong-way driver on Interstate 8 struck a vehicle head-on Saturday night, resulting in a fatality and serious injuries, authorities reported.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a man driving a white Chevrolet truck was traveling westbound in the wrong direction from Fletcher Parkway around 11:40 p.m. The truck collided head-on with a blue Honda Accord about 2 miles west of Fletcher Parkway, in the left eastbound lane near 70th Street.
The Honda’s driver sustained major injuries and was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego.
Following the head-on collision on I-8, the Chevrolet driver attempted to flee across the westbound lanes and was fatally struck by a black Ford F-150 truck. The Ford’s occupants, a man and a woman, were unharmed.
The involvement of alcohol or drugs for the wrong-way driver remains unclear, though DUI was ruled out for the other drivers. The investigation is ongoing.
