NTSB Launches Probe into Tesla Semi-Truck Fire on I-80 Placer

PLACER, CA (August 22, 2024) — The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated a safety investigation in collaboration with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) following a Tesla semi-truck crash and fire in Placer County earlier this week. The incident happened just after 3 a.m. Monday on eastbound Interstate 80 near Emigrant Gap.
The electric semi-truck veered off the road and crashed into trees, causing its lithium-ion batteries to ignite. The resulting fire burned for several hours, leading to a complete closure of the freeway throughout the evening. CHP officials indicated that the fire created a hazardous materials situation due to toxic fumes from the burning batteries.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. The NTSB stated that the investigation will focus on the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. A preliminary report into the Tesla semi-truck fire in Placer is expected within 30 days.
Electric vehicle fires, particularly those involving lithium-ion batteries, present significant challenges for firefighters due to the large amounts of water required to extinguish them and the toxic fumes produced.
