Porterville Corrections Officer Dies in Multi-Vehicle Crash on Highway 65

PORTERVILLE, CA (June 1, 2024) — A 22-year-old Porterville corrections officer, Arturo Luis Garcia, died in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 65, south of Sherwood Avenue, on May 29, 2024, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the accident at approximately 6:22 p.m. A preliminary investigation revealed that Garcia, driving a Toyota, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes attempting to pass traffic when he collided with an oncoming vehicle. The coroner’s office identified Garcia on May 30.
Garcia became a corrections officer in November 2023 and began his assignment at Salinas Valley State Prison in March 2024. The CDCR released a statement expressing their condolences: “Please join me in extending our condolences to the Garcia family and keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.”
