Medline Recalls Bed Assist Bars Due to Entrapment Risk, Death Reports
CALIFORNIA (June 1, 2024) — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Medline Industries LP have announced the recall of two models of Bed Assist Bar adult portable bed rails. These bed rails, with model numbers MDS6800BA and MDS6800BAH, pose significant risks of entrapment and asphyxia.
Medline has received two reports of deaths associated with these Bed Assist Bars. The incidents, occurring in July 2019 and November 2023, involved a 76-year-old woman at a senior nursing facility in Iowa and an 87-year-old woman at a residential care facility in South Carolina.
The recalled bed rails, made of black metal tubing with a rounded black foam rubber grip handle and a fabric pouch, were sold individually (model MDS6800BA) and in cases of three units (model MDS6800BAH). The name “Medline” and the model number are printed on a label located on the support frame.
Approximately 1.5 million units were sold between July 2009 and March 2024, priced between $32 and $64. These bed rails were available on Medline’s websites, major online retailers like Amazon and Walmart.com, and online pharmacies such as CVS.com and Walgreens.com. They were manufactured in China.
