UC Sued Over Alleged Mishandling of Sexual Assault Claim [Los Angeles, CA]

LOS ANGELES, CA (May 23, 2024) — The University of California is facing a lawsuit filed by Jocelyn Fredell, a former employee at UC Santa Cruz, who alleges the institution mishandled her sexual assault claim.
Fredell claims she was assaulted by her supervisor, Joshua Solis, during an overnight work trip and that the university failed to take appropriate action against him.
According to the lawsuit, the incident occurred in a hotel room where Solis allegedly assaulted Fredell. Despite reporting the assault to another supervisor, Fredell alleges that Solis was neither suspended nor removed from his position on a panel deciding Fredell’s employment status. Fredell was subsequently denied the permanent position she was applying for.
The Universtiy of California lawsuit, which includes claims of sexual harassment, assault, and retaliation, asserts that the university did not adequately address the severity of the complaint. The complaint also highlights delays and inaction in reporting the incident to the university and authorities.
A spokesperson for UC Santa Cruz declined to comment on the lawsuit but emphasized the university’s commitment to addressing sexual misconduct and supporting victims.
