Mother Sues LaMelo Ball After Alleged Incident at Fan Event Injures Son

(May 22, 2024) — A North Carolina mother has filed a lawsuit against Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball and the team, alleging that Ball ran over her 11-year-old son’s foot with his car at a fan event last fall.
Tamaira McRae and her son, Angell Joseph, attended a Hornets fan event at the Spectrum Center in October. As fans approached players leaving the arena, Joseph asked Ball for an autograph. According to McRae, Ball did not sign anything and instead “accelerated his vehicle forward suddenly,” running over Joseph’s foot and breaking it.
The lawsuit, filed on Tuesday in Mecklenburg County Superior Court, claims Ball was negligent in operating his vehicle, failing to maintain proper control and yield the right of way. It also alleges that the Hornets did not provide adequate security and pedestrian control at the event.
The attorney representing the family in the LaMelo ball injury lawsuit noted that a police report from the incident lacked key information, preventing them from filing an insurance claim, which contributed to their decision to pursue legal action.
