Wrong-Way Driver Arrested After Crash on SR-78 in San Marcos
SAN DIEGO, CA (July 28, 2024) — A driver was apprehended Saturday night following a wrong-way collision on State Route 78.
The events began around 11:30 p.m. in Vista when reports of a possible stabbing near East Orange Street and The Circle prompted a response from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies arriving at the scene observed a Honda Accord speeding away and attempted a traffic stop. The driver refused to comply, leading deputies on a pursuit.
“The driver blew through several stop lights during the pursuit. Upon reaching Sycamore Avenue, the driver entered SR-78 going the wrong way,” the department said in a press release. Deputies stopped the pursuit for safety reasons and notified the California Highway Patrol (CHP) of the wrong-way vehicle.
Approximately 10 minutes later, authorities received calls about a traffic accident on SR-78 near Rancho Santa Fe in San Marcos. Witnesses reported seeing the driver crawl out of the car and jump into a ditch near Smilax Road. Deputies from the Vista and San Marcos Sheriff’s Stations confirmed the crashed vehicle was the same one from the earlier pursuit.
No other vehicles were involved in the San Marcos crash. A sheriff’s K-9 handler was deployed, and the driver was taken into custody without incident and transported to Palomar Medical Center for a leg injury. The suspect’s identity has not been released. The initial report of a fight and stabbing in Vista was determined to be unfounded, the department said. The CHP is handling the investigation.
