Victims Identified in Deadly Devil’s Slide Crash
SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA (July 28, 2024) — Three people died Friday when their car tumbled down a cliff into the ocean near Devil’s Slide on California’s Highway 1.
The single-vehicle Devil’s Slide crash reportedly happened just before noon, prompting police, fire crews, and other first responders to mobilize for a cliff rescue. The gray two-door sedan veered off the southbound side of the road and plunged about 300 feet down an embankment between Pacifica and Montara, a California Highway Patrol spokesperson told local news agencies.
Authorities shut down the road for several hours as rescuers rappelled down the cliff to the overturned vehicle, partially submerged in seawater. “It was a recovery mission with steep cliffs and tough terrain,” a Cal Fire official was quoted as saying to reporters. “The car was partially submerged, so our rescuers were taking on waves.”
The violent impact scattered debris from the vehicle. Rescuers pronounced two of the car’s occupants dead at the scene. Efforts to recover the bodies were hindered by an incoming high tide and required heavy machinery to cut apart the wreckage. A third victim was found inside the car on Saturday, authorities said.
The San Mateo County Coroner’s office identified the victims on Sunday as Mohammad Noory, 29, from South San Francisco; Brylyn Aroma, 36, from Fort Riley, Kansas, and Angelica Gacho, 28, from South of San Francisco.
