Lithium-Ion Fire From Overturned Semi-Truck Shuts Down 15 Freeway For A Day

lithium truck crash

BAKER, CA (July 28, 2024) — The 15 Freeway reopened early Sunday morning after a crash involving an overturned semi-truck caused a massive traffic backup and stranded Las Vegas-bound drivers for over a day. The incident happened at around 8am on Friday and involved a truck hauling lithium-ion batteries that caught fire near Baker, according to the San Bernardino Fire Department.

The hazardous fire led to the shutdown of both sides of the freeway as crews worked to contain the flames. The San Bernardino County Fire Department explained that lithium-ion fires are particularly dangerous due to the chemicals released and the potential for thermal runaway, which can cause rapid fire spread and toxic gas emissions.

Traffic built up for miles as authorities struggled to remove the 75,000-pound container from the highway. The extreme heat in the desert area, with temperatures reaching around 110 degrees, exacerbated the situation, leading to 911 calls from drivers experiencing heat-related emergencies.

Despite efforts, firefighters were still battling the fire well into Saturday. By Sunday at 2:30 a.m., Caltrans reported that crews had made significant progress, allowing two lanes to reopen. All northbound lanes were fully reopened by 3:46 a.m. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the 15 Freeway lithium truck crash.
