Family Suffers Injuries in Mendocino Plane Crash
MENDOCINO COUNTY, CA (March 12, 2024) — A small plane crash in Mendocino County on Friday afternoon resulted in minor injuries for three passengers, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.
At 1:15 p.m., emergency responders were dispatched to the crash site near Usal Road in Whitethorn, where they found a 38-year-old man, a 38-year-old woman, and a 2-year-old girl, all from Santa Rosa, with only minor cuts and scratches.
The aircraft experienced engine failure five minutes post-takeoff, leading the pilot to deploy the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System in a desperate attempt to salvage a low-altitude situation. This action slowed the descent before the plane ultimately crashed into trees in a densely forested area on Yellow Road.
Authorities initiated aircraft accident protocols, notifying the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), who are tasked with the investigation of civilian aircraft accidents.
