SAN FRANCISCO, CA – A deadly multi-car crash in San Francisco on Sunday evening marked the first time in the U.S. that a truly autonomous vehicle, without a driver in the seat, was involved in a fatal accident.
The crash, which happened at the corner of 6th and Harrison Streets, involved a self-driving Waymo car, although the vehicle is not being blamed for the incident. A fast-moving vehicle slammed into a line of cars stopped at a traffic light, striking the Waymo and five other vehicles.
While the Waymo was empty, a passenger in one of the other vehicles and a dog were killed, with several others suffering injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requires companies like Waymo to report accidents involving their self-driving cars, regardless of fault.
Waymo has stated that nearly all its vehicle crashes, including this one, were caused by human drivers. Despite the collision, the company emphasized its commitment to safety and continues to work with local authorities.
