The family of Neelam Shinde, an Indian student who had gone into a coma after a road accident in California, has been granted emergency visas by the U.S. embassy. The visas were issued on Friday following an interview at the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai.
Shinde’s father, Tanhaji Shinde, confirmed that the family received a call from the embassy and was granted visas within half an hour. He expressed gratitude for the support received from both the central and Maharashtra governments, as well as the media.
Neelam was struck by a speeding vehicle while walking in Sacramento, leaving her with severe fractures in her legs, skull, and left arm, along with a traumatic brain injury that placed her in a coma. Her family is now preparing to travel to the U.S. in hopes of being by her side as she recovers.
Her uncle, Sanjay Kadam, praised the government for its assistance but urged authorities to streamline the emergency visa process for families facing similar crises. The Indian consulate in San Francisco has assured the family of its continued support.
