Authorities say 28-year-old Xavier Torres led deputies on a high-speed chase on Highway 99 in south Sacramento while his two young children were in the car.
The pursuit began when officers spotted a vehicle missing license plates and attempted to pull it over. Instead, Torres fled onto a residential street, where his vehicle collided with a bystander’s car near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and 23rd Avenue.
Deputies quickly apprehended Torres at the scene. A loaded handgun, reported stolen, and a small amount of suspected cocaine were discovered in his vehicle. The driver of the other car sustained only minor injuries, and both children, aged two and six months, were safely released to their mother’s custody.
Torres was arrested on charges including hit-and-run and is currently held at Sacramento County Jail on a $75,000 bond. Authorities continue to investigate.
