A man in his 40s was taken into custody early Monday following a police pursuit that ended in a violent rollover crash at a high-speed rail construction zone in Fresno.
The incident began around 3:15 a.m. when officers spotted a stolen pickup truck traveling through the city. The driver reportedly fled after officers attempted an initial traffic stop, but the first pursuit was called off when the vehicle began driving into oncoming lanes, raising concerns for public safety.
Shortly afterward, the truck was seen again heading west on Ashlan Avenue, prompting a second attempt by law enforcement to pull the driver over. The suspect accelerated, initiating a felony pursuit that spanned several streets.
The chase came to a crashing halt near the intersection of Clovis and McKinley Avenues, when the suspect lost control and rolled the vehicle into an active construction zone for California’s high-speed rail project at Belmont Avenue.
According to Fresno police, the driver tried to flee on foot following the crash but was quickly apprehended. He was taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation before being booked into the Fresno County Jail.
No injuries to officers or bystanders were reported. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name, and the investigation remains ongoing.
