California Senate District 31 senator Sabrina Cervantes was recently arrested for a DUI near the State Capitol in Sacramento Monday afternoon.
The senator was rushed to the hospital after crashing into another vehicle on the day, where it was later revealed that she was driving under the influence of alcohol. She was cited with a misdemeanor before her release.
Local news outlets say that Senator Cervantes had sent a statement via text denying the alleged charges while saying the police were accosting her. She reportedly said that the Sacramento Police are falsely accusing her of DUI and had detained her for several hours at the hospital.
“I was accosted by Sacramento Police Department officers, falsely accused of driving under the influence, and involuntarily detained for several hours at the hospital,” she said in the text.
Cervantes noted how the incident affected her, adding that she did nothing wrong and that the lab results concluded she had no alcohol in her system by the time of the crash.
In an email to local news outlets, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s office said that it is waiting on toxicology tests to be completed, and that it will review all the facts of the case before making any official statements.
