3 year old Tests Positive For Fentanyl

A 41-year-old man is facing felony child endangerment charges after his 3-year-old relative tested positive for fentanyl exposure during a Fourth of July weekend trip in Newport Beach.

Eric Duane Bird was arrested after the child was hospitalized with severe symptoms, including difficulty breathing and a blue complexion. Paramedics administered epinephrine and Narcan, which helped stabilize the toddler, officials said.

Investigators discovered a backpack at the Airbnb rental containing a silicone “nectar collector,” a container of fentanyl, and burned foil. The bag was left unsecured and accessible to children throughout the trip, according to police.

Bird has been charged with one felony count of child abuse and endangerment and one misdemeanor count of drug possession. He pleaded not guilty and is being held on $100,000 bail. If convicted, he faces up to six years in state prison.

The child has since recovered. The investigation remains ongoing.
