SAN MATEO, CA — A 30-year-old mother lost her life and her two young children were critically injured after a Highway 92 crash in San Mateo.
The collision occurred around 6:17 p.m. on the off-ramp to Alameda de las Pulgas. According to the San Mateo Police Department, the accident involved a Ford SUV and a Toyota Prius.
The Prius driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Her children, ages 5 and 7, were transported to the hospital in critical condition. The Ford driver, who was the sole occupant of his vehicle, sustained minor injuries.
Authorities stated the Ford was exiting eastbound Highway 92 when it allegedly ran a red light, broadsiding the Prius, which was traveling north on Alameda de las Pulgas with a green light.
Police confirmed that the Ford driver was not under the influence of any substances. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Alameda de las Pulgas and both the on- and off-ramps of eastbound Highway 92 were closed for several hours during the investigation.
