AMADOR COUNTY, CA — A 79-year-old woman from Jackson died Thursday following a head-on crash in Amador County, along Highway 49.
The accident happened around 1 p.m. when a southbound Ford Mustang, just south of Highway 16, veered off the road into the right shoulder. The driver overcorrected and crossed into the northbound lane, where the car collided head-on with a Toyota RAV4.
The driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene. The Mustang driver was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Hospital; their condition remains unknown.
Highway 49 was shut down in both directions for two hours following the crash. Authorities confirmed both drivers were wearing seatbelts. It is still unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.
