
BAKERSFIELD, CA — A tragic drunk driving accident in East Bakersfield left an 8-year-old boy fighting for his life and his father with moderate injuries after they were hit by a suspected drunk driver Monday afternoon, according to authorities.
The crash happened shortly after noon, around 12:09 p.m., in the 1400 block of East California Avenue, near Haley Street. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of a pickup truck traveling westbound lost control, crashed through a fence, and slammed into a parking lot where a food truck was operating.
A man and his young son were in the area when they were struck by the vehicle. The child sustained life-threatening injuries, while his father suffered moderate injuries. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
The driver, identified as 33-year-old Andres Serna, was determined by police to be under the influence of alcohol. Serna was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment of his own injuries before being placed in custody.
