MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — A serious multi-vehicle crash in Gonzales involving a Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) bus left several people injured Friday morning.
According to initial reports, the driver of a Kia sedan traveling northbound on the Old Stage Road overcrossing ran a stop sign and illegally passed the MST bus, entering the southbound lane. As it crossed into oncoming traffic, the Kia collided head-on with a GMC pickup carrying a woman and two juveniles.
The force of the head-on impact caused the sedan to spin out of control and then strike the MST bus.
CHP officials said the woman driving the GMC suffered moderate injuries, and one passenger had minor injuries; both were transported to a hospital. The Kia driver and his female passenger sustained major injuries and were also hospitalized.
The MST bus was carrying 10 passengers headed to La Casa Adult Day Health Center in Salinas. No serious injuries were reported among the passengers or the driver, according to MST. The bus was instructed to return the passengers to their homes.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor.
