Baby Dies in Hot Car in Santee, Investigation Underway [San Diego, CA]

SAN DIEGO, CA (June 21, 2024) — A 2-month-old baby girl was found unresponsive in a hot SUV parked outside a home in Santee last Thursday, prompting a death investigation, sheriff’s officials said.
A family member discovered the baby inside the SUV on Settle Road near Dalehurst Road around 12:20 a.m. on June 13 and called 911. The vehicle had been parked for “several hours,” according to the Sheriff’s Department.
Emergency responders arrived and provided immediate care, but the baby was pronounced dead at Sharp Grossmont Hospital. The county Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death. The baby’s name has not been released.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. Officials are asking anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s child abuse unit at (858) 285-6222 or the Sheriff’s Department non-emergency line at (858) 868-3200.
This tragic infant death in Santee occurred just days before the official start of summer. Sheriff’s officials reminded the public that it is illegal to leave a child alone in a car, emphasizing the rapid increase in vehicle temperature, which can reach 105 degrees when it is only 75 degrees outside.
According to the nonprofit group Kids and Car Safety, this would be at least the third child to die in a hot car this year. More than 1,085 children have died in hot cars nationwide since 1990, with over 85 percent of victims being age 3 or younger.
