Bicyclist Fatally Struck in South LA During Police Chase

south LA bike crash

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 26, 2024)A police chase in South Los Angeles turned tragic Wednesday morning when a man riding a bicycle was struck and killed. The incident began shortly after 6 a.m., following a report of a theft from a vehicle that led to a high-speed pursuit by LAPD’s Newton Division.

The chase escalated when the suspect, failing to stop at the command of police, hit the bicyclist near the intersection of Hooper Avenue and 46th Street. The suspect’s vehicle continued to cause havoc, colliding with eight other vehicles before it rolled over and came to a stop, severely damaged and upside down.

Despite the multiple collisions, no other serious injuries were reported among the occupants of the vehicles, according to LAPD Det. Meghan Aguilar. “It’s quite a miracle considering the force needed for such damage,” Aguilar remarked.

The suspect in the South LA bike crash was arrested at the scene and is facing undisclosed felony charges. The condition of the bicyclist’s body and the extent of the suspect’s injuries have not been fully disclosed. The scene, described by witnesses as devastating, drew significant attention from local residents and media.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident. This latest event adds to concerns about rising incidents of violence and crime in the area, as echoed by a local resident recounting recent alarming activities.
