FREMONT, CA (July 19, 2024) — A fatal six-vehicle crash involving a big rig shut down southbound Interstate Highway 680 in Fremont for six hours on Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Around 7:05 a.m., officers responded to a collision in the southbound lanes just north of the Mission Boulevard South off-ramp. CHP Officer Tyler Hahn reported that the driver of a big rig, hauling a load of meat, failed to stop in time and rear-ended a Toyota Venza.
The impact caused the big rig to strike three other vehicles before veering off the highway and down an embankment. The driver of the Toyota Venza died at the scene, while two others sustained minor injuries and were transported to local hospitals. Authorities closed multiple southbound lanes to investigate and clear the scene of the big rig crash on I-680. Traffic resumed shortly after 1 p.m..
