California Boy Declared Brain Dead After Hit-and-Run Crash
GARDEN GROVE, CA (July 17, 2024) — A devastating hit-and-run crash in Garden Grove on July 7 left five-year-old Jacob Ramirez brain dead and his entire family hospitalized. The incident happened when a drunk driver in a black 2003 Toyota Camry struck the Ramirez family, who were riding bikes with their children in tow. [We reported this story early this month.]
The family was cycling around 7 p.m. when the crash occurred. Jacob’s parents, Angel Ramirez and Angela Hernandez-Mejia, along with their three children, were all rushed to the hospital. While Angela and their eight-month-old daughter Lydia have been discharged, Angel and their seven-year-old daughter Gianna remain in critical condition. Jacob underwent several surgeries, but a final brain scan revealed no activity.
The driver, Ceferino Ascencion Ramos, 29, fled the scene but was followed by a witness who alerted the police. Ramos was arrested and charged, with a blood alcohol content of .22, nearly three times the legal limit.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer condemned the incident, highlighting the tragic impact on the Ramirez family. A GoFundMe page has been established to help cover their medical and funeral expenses.
