California Teacher Tragically Dies After Falling on Arizona Hiking Trail
ORANGE COUNTY, CA (April 20, 2024) — A California teacher, Zaynab Joseph, 40, tragically died after falling from a cliff during a hike on Bear Mountain near Sedona, Arizona, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office. The accident occurred on Monday morning while she was hiking with her husband and 1-year-old child.
Joseph, a resident of Huntington Beach and a science teacher at Orange Crescent School in Garden Grove, fell approximately 140 feet. Despite immediate efforts by a nearby hiker and rapid response from Sedona Fire District, sheriff’s search and rescue teams, and an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter unit, Joseph was pronounced dead at the scene.
The area, located within the Coconino National Forest and approximately 116 miles north of Phoenix, is known for its challenging terrain. The U.S. Forest Service describes the trail as steep and strenuous, climbing over 1,800 feet in elevation.
In remembrance, the Islamic Society of Orange County will hold a memorial service at the Orange Crescent School, where she taught. The community and school mourn the loss of a beloved educator and community member.
The Arizona hiking accident is currently under investigation, and authorities are seeking witnesses to the fall.
